Since cats are different animals than dogs are, how can you tell if they really love you? They love to lounge around, sleep, eat, and be by themselves. However, there are ways to tell if they do love you or not. All you have to do is pay close enough attention. Below are the top 10 ways to know if your cat really loves you or not.
1) Catch them slow blinking at you
If you’ve ever caught your cat staring at you, there is a good reason for it. Once you make eye contact with them they will start to do a slow blink at you. This is a sign of affection and being comfortable with you. This not only means they are comfortable being around you but they are showing submissiveness at the same time. Closing their eyes is a sign of trust since they aren’t trying to be aggressive. They may even do it several times and meow at you. Eventually they may come to you too and want to lay on you.
2) Perks up when you enter the room
If your cat changes their behavior such as meowing and acknowledging your presence, getting up and coming to you or laying down next to you when you enter the room, this is a sign your cat loves you. They want to be near you and may even want you to know they are there. They also will want your affection and by coming to you they hope to receive love and scratches. Pay close attention the next time you enter the room where your furry friend is.
3) Head butts and rubs on you
When a cat head butts you, it’s a sign of affection. You can typically see this type of behavior when you are close to them. They may even come to you if you sit down and start to head butt you. Our cats do this commonly when we are laying on the couch or during feeding time. They will rub themselves all over us. It’s similar to marking us as their own and shows how comfortable they are in our presence.
4) Cuddles up with you
Whether you’re on the couch, chair, bed, or sitting on the floor, if your cat comes over to you and lays either on you or rests part of themselves on you (such as their head or paws) then they love you. They are comfortable with you and want to be near you. It also brings them comfort being near you because they will feel at ease due to your presence. It’s crazy to know that just your presence alone can be calming to your cat and bring them lots of joy. Just don’t forget the scratches and pets.
5) Waits for you outside the door
If you’re a parent, you know that your children will be clawing at the door or trying to get into whatever room you are in. Your cat will be no exception. Our cat “Mickey” will howl and stick their paw under the door if I’m behind it. She will even become vocal until I open the door. An example is when I go to the bathroom, if she’s not in there with me, she vocally protests. On those occasions where she is in there with me, she lays at my feet or lays on my clothes bin.
6) Brings dead things to you
Cats often show affection by bringing you some of the things they have caught. Whether it’s a dead insect, bird, or some other type of animal, they will leave it somewhere you are or even drop it in front of you. Even though they may have never seen you eat or play with the creature, they want you to be happy and fed. No matter how gross it seems to us.
7) Licks you
Cats will lick you for a couple of reasons. They may be trying to groom you, clean you, or show affection. If your cat licks you out of the blue or comes over and starts to groom you by licking your arms, face, or hair, it is a sign that they love you. If allowed, they will continue to lick you until they deem you clean. This is also something that can happen when it’s time to sleep. They will come lay on you and may even groom your hair for you.
8) Chooses you over another family member
If you live with a boy/girl friend or have a significant other in the house, chances are your cat may have a favorite. If both of you are on the couch or in the bedroom relaxing and your cat comes in, who do they choose? If they choose you over your partner, odds are they love you more.
9) Sleeps in your clothes
Your cat loves your smell and if they can’t be near you, they may want the next best thing. If you bring your cat into the bathroom and you jump in the shower, does your cat go and sleep on your clothes? Cats who love you will sleep in your clothes because they have your scent on them. They are used to it and it makes them happy. You may even find them in your clothes drawer or hamper from time to time. We’ve also found our cats napping in our bed sheets. This is due to the same reason as it’s a comfortable place for them to be as well as it contains our smell.
10) Always near you
Whenever you are home, whether it’s relaxing, cleaning, or making food, if your cat loves you they will be near by. Whether it’s laying by your feet if you’re at your computer desk, laying in the kitchen within eyesight or closer, or if you’re laying on the couch, your cat will be close by or on top of you. This is a sign of affection because your cat wants to be near you. It’s also a sign of protection as well because if something does happen to you, they are within reach very quickly.
